ASHES : YESNOMAYBE

MUSIC VIDEO / AUGMENTED REALITY

'Ashes' is the first song from the Pastense EP by my solo project Yesnomaybe. The music video was made using custom-built Augmented Reality filters. Camera vision and face/body tracking capabilities of mobile devices and computers were used to create visuals using AR as a performative tool.

With lush synth textures and 80's nostalgia reimagined, Ashes is a track that paints a dystopian dream with an ominous mood of impending doom, while still being naively hopeful. I wanted to build on the hazy vibe of the song and accentuate it through the visuals.

PROCESS

The process for Ashes involved creating three AR filters which would serve as the core visuals for sections of the song. Each filter was meant to accentuate the hazy/shoegaze mood while creating a unique workflow for generating bespoke visuals.

All the footage for the video was shot in-camera, live-in-action, without renting an expensive Green-Screen Studio. It also enabled a quick turnaround for rotoscopy, which would traditionally require countless hours of frame-by-frame animation on extremely well-specced, resource-heavy computers.

It took two months from concept to development to the final render of the music video.
